This series profiles each of the 9 Things You Simply Must Do – to succeed in love and life by Dr. Henry Cloud. We’ve already covered Part I: Be Humble, and Part II: Upset the Right People. This article focuses on discovering or unearthing: the hidden potential that lies in each one of us, as well as the pains and hurts that prevent us from becoming successful. We need to ‘dig up’ this treasure and invest ourselves in it. We also need to ‘dig up’ the hurts and deal with them as they’ll prevent growth. Simply, we dig it up and resolve it.

“The invisible world is always where the visible world originates.”[1] We need to become aware of whatever is in our heart and then dig it up. In other words, our heart’s desire comes from deep within our soul and it’s our job to find life within and not ‘die with potential.’

There is a process for successfully ‘digging up,’ and it runs loosely like this:

~ We become aware of our dreams and talents;
~ We listen to them and take them seriously;
~ We act to develop them, even in small ways;
~ We seek and value coaching to grow them; and finally,
~ Everything is underscored in the fact that we don’t care about the results -- we continue investing in the hope our dreams will one day emerge as a reality.

We have to then “weigh it, deal with it, talk through it, process it, integrate it with (our) values, judge it, and chew on it until (we) know with wisdom exactly what (we) are doing.”[2]

Finally, we have to take action. We need to do it diligently however. We don’t flippantly risk all to invest in our talents, dreams and desires -- that would be foolishness. We take wise risks. Sometimes we might actually need to suspend dreams and desires, for instance, if it’s not the right time; we may have people to support, so charging off on a dodgy business venture that speaks to our heart would be unwise. Suspending something is not burying it. The essence is successful people listen to and act on what’s going on inside them. This requires courage -- we have to guard our hearts in the process as it is the wellspring of life. (Proverbs 4:23)

1. Listen to what bugs you. It might be a message.
2. Don’t let negative feelings just sit there. Do something about them.
3. Listen to your symptoms. They might be telling you that you have something to dig up.
4. Pay attention to your fantasies. They may be telling you that something is missing that you need to resolve in appropriate ways.
5. Face the fears and obstacles that have caused you to bury your treasures.
6. Don’t confuse envy with desire. You may be envious of someone else’s life because you have lost touch with your own.
7. Do everything above in the context of your values and your community of people who are committed to guarding your heart. If you do not have such a community, find one and join it.

Successful people don’t ignore important stuff going on inside them. They dig it up and invest in the good and get rid of the bad -- and they do so quickly! They do not procrastinate on issues that important to their wellbeing.

We all have ‘buried treasure.’ We all also have buried hurts, pains, and damage which needs to be fleshed out. We’re full of potential realities. What needs to happen is the ‘reclaiming of the land’ of our hearts. This is one thing you really must do.
