Our God Is an Awesome God

Our God is an awesome God; He reigns from heaven above; With wisdom, power, and love; Our God is an awesome God. ~Rich Mullins, Awesome God.

What has become a favourite in our churches at a time of worship is thick with theological meaning, even beyond that emotion of God’s Presence anointing us by the transaction between the head and the heart and the Holy Spirit within.

God Reigns In The Heavens

Following in the vein of John 16:11 and Ephesians 2:2, it’s clear that God’s realm is in the heavens, whilst the devil tries valiantly to hold sway in this world. But despite the Fall the devil doesn’t have it all his own way. As the national legislature has precedence over that of the state, so our Lord has the final say overall; we accept and believe this by faith, and by knowledge of the Word.

With Wisdom

God reigns with Wisdom. That wisdom was used to engineer a plan; to foresee events from the porch of love, and to provide the vehicle and the means and the rationale for salvation—and not just the Jews; for Gentiles also. That plan reached its crescendo in Christ.

Wisdom can be seen, paradoxically, in the infinite quality of God. Not only is wisdom about the past, present and future, it describes science, history, biology and everything that can be known. In sum, God is omniscient—all-knowing. This is a wisdom far above our loftiest human breakthroughs.

With Power

God reigns with Power. This power of God is enshrined in wisdom; even at its most foolish it easily outsmarts the puny power of human wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:25). But power doesn’t just come in this form. We only have to look at the physical world to see trillions of examples of God’s visible power. This power that comes from heaven powers the whole universe: the entire creation. We can never grasp the entirety of this concept.

God is omnipotent—all-powerful.

With Love

Wisdom has been badged with Love. The wisdom of God, which is a thing that underpins everything, has been procured and ensconced in the love of God, which is also a bond of truth. Love, truth, and wisdom form together, with many others, virtue.

Virtue is a key in the world where vice attempts to reign.

When we sing that God reigns with love, we sing about the trust that we have that our care is well placed in God; this Lord will never fail us. Even when things dry up and get tough the love of the Lord is overseeing us and our situations, eternally.

We can see that God is omnipresent—always present—and this all-encapsulating quality of God speaks countless volumes about a love that never fails.

God’s love drives our faith because our trust is well placed. This Divine love compels us to hope because the faithfulness of God in the past informs, reliably, our future.

Our hope is sure.
