“You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, but only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
~Haggai 1:6 (NIV).
In a sense, our very lives often symbolise the sentiment of the abovementioned verse. We feel like we’re always being prepared for something but are never quite achieving it. The promise remains, ‘just over there a little farther.’
In its original context the rebuilding of the Temple had eluded the people of Jerusalem but a movement was beginning to occur. An ascendency toward that goal was being realised.
The literal interpretation to “Give careful thought to your ways,” a refrain consistent in Haggai, is ‘set your heart on your ways,’ or in other words, “commit.”
For us, we too have our potential—the time for the realisation of all that practise we’ve been undertaking; a time when training will make way for productivity and scarcity for abundance.
It beckons. It nears. The time for fruitfulness is nigh.
But we mustn’t rush the process in the meantime. Let it infuse and enrich, blossom and ferment. Allow it to mature under its own steam. Don’t force a thing.
The thing is we will get to the other side of the current dimension and when we do and we’ve remained there for some time we’ll look back fondly at the process and journey that brought us to this place. We’ll only then appreciate the faith it took to journey all the way; to keep going despite “only” the unrealised potential.
Growth stands now before you. Opportunities to capitalise upon; strengths to hone and weaknesses to mould into capacity. See the vision, hold it and believe in it.
