A Poem on Doing Godly Well

You know how it feels when you’re taken for granted,

It seems like these prayers of yours just aren’t being answered,

Distracted by people who just want their way,

Just what are we going to do, think or say?

Tests come to all in such a life as this,

Times it could be considered anything but bliss,

Coming down the track toward the crass offender,

Reminded in an instant, praise God, to respond every bit tender.

We learn a moment too late, it seems, the value of awareness,

Courage to not react—though it seems a contrite unfairness,

And when we’ve succeeded we grin from ear to ear,

Oh the glint—special enough—warranting a quiet tear.

Instructed by our parents to do what’s right and just,

We practiced it enough to experience a sharp disgust,

For when we did right our peers usually did wrong,

It’s enough for anyone to break out in a lament song!

But as we know now the central plan of life,

Do good no matter what and we’re never really in strife,

Knowing God truly; the sense to trust and obey him,

A sure fire method, our love is conveyed him.

Whatever we think, life’s not always just, is it? We do the best we can and we get trounced. When we don’t have the energy to give our best—thinking of all excuses imaginable—we see the world as even more unjust.

But often life’s a bed of roses; for a time we can only wait and savour, before the bubble truly bursts.

It’s no good in life to worry about the lazier ones who just seem to be doing better. Comparisons enter us into dangerous territory; we’re wise not to go there. As the Bible tells us, ‘Let us not get weary in doing our good deeds—they will mount up for us a harvest of spiritual wealth if we just do not give up.’

The poem and words of description are dedicated to 2 Thessalonians 3:13 and Galatians 6:9.
