“He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm,
and he guided them to their desired haven.”
~Psalm 107:29-30 (NIV).
Prophetic perhaps of Christ’s calming of the storm (Matthew 8:23-27) the above passage is indicative of true spiritual experience of response—ours to seek healing and God’s to deliver us. Not only did Jesus calm the storm on the Lake of Galilee that day, he calms the storms in our hearts, today—if we’ll allow.
The living Lord, via the ministry of the Holy Spirit, sees us faithfully hold to his promises despite what we see and he calms the affect of those tumults. This cannot be explained. It just is. It is experienced by faith. It is the experience of faith, combined with divine revelation. Faith is not sight. The trouble is still there but our experience of it is completely different. We’re numbed beautifully to the power of the pain but not robbed of its reality. We know it and feel it, but its dangerous effect on us is nullified. Amazingly, we can still experience our joy. This can only be of God. As a result, our faith heralds God’s glory.
Only in faith can we consistently find our way home to that ‘desired haven.’ These, of course, are not geographical places. They are places in our minds and hearts.
Faith is routinely and repetitively allowing God to still the storms of the heart. It is confidence. It is peace.
Shalom!
